A driver who hit a bicyclist on Monday, then administered first aid to the victim only to disappear when an ambulance arrived, turned himself in on Friday, authorities said.
Brian Douglas Fyfe, 27, of the 500 block of Muirfield Drive in Atlantis, hit Catarino Mancilla Oviedo, 27, at 9:35 p.m. on Kirk Road north of the Lakewood Road intersection, Florida Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Ferrell said.
Ferrell said Oviedo, who had moved to Lake Worth from Texas three weeks ago, died of his injuries at Delray Community Hospital an hour later.
Fyfe surrendered to Florida Highway Patrol officers late Friday afternoon and was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.
Fyfe and Oviedo were traveling south on Kirk Road when Oviedo was struck from behind, Ferrell said. Fyfe got out of his 1989 Chevrolet van and administered CPR. According to witnesses, he “showed some concern,” Ferrell said. He asked one of the witnesses to take off his shirt to apply pressure to the victim’s neck. But when Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue arrived, Fyfe left.
According to police, Fyfe drove to the home of Matthew Hardeman in Lake Worth around 12:30 a.m. and asked him to repair the van’s windshield. Hardeman, who does auto repairs out of his back yard, told Fyfe to bring the van back on Tuesday morning.
When Hardeman’s co-worker, Patrick DeMichele, repaired the windshield, he kept the original. After seeing television reports of the accident, Hardeman and DeMichele turned the windshield over to the police on Wednesday. Strands of hair were in the windshield.
At 3:08 p.m. Friday, Fyfe arrived with his attorney at the Lantana Highway Patrol office, where he was arrested.
