Heading into fight week, the excitement is beginning to build for one of South Florida’s biggest nights of professional boxing.

Six title fights, including Trinidad’s title defense against Mamadou Thiam of France, will be held Saturday night at AmericanAirlines Arena.

The Don King Productions “Glory & Adventure, A Tale Of Two Cities” pro card features the most title fights ever held on one card in South Florida. It will be televised by HBO. The arena is being set up to hold 17,500 seats, priced as low as $15 in some sections and as high as $750 for VIPs, according to Bobby Goodman, vice president of boxing operations for DKP. The first title fight begins at 6 p.m., with the Trinidad-Thiam bout scheduled for 10:45 p.m.

“We saw this as an opportunity to get a mega-event in South Florida,” Goodman said. “Our contention has always been that we like to bring boxing to the people and to the arenas as opposed to the casino environment. We want to build a fan base down here. This is a chance to do a really big event to get a barometer on what we think we can do here.”

Trinidad is expected to arrive today from Puerto Rico for final preparations for the fight and a weeklong list of fight-related activities and appearances. Several boxers on the card are already training at various locations in South Florida, including Gerrits Leprechaun Gym.

Closed workouts will be held this week at the auxiliary gym at AmericanAirlines Arena. There are plans to have an open workout for the public later in the week. Weigh-ins for the fight are Friday at the Wyndham Hotel in Miami. Heat coach Pat Riley, a big fight fan from his Los Angeles Lakers coaching days, plans to bring some of his free agents by to watch workouts and sparring sessions.

Trinidad (37-0, 30 KOs) returns to South Florida for the first time in six years to defend his crown. The last big world title fight in Miami was held nearly 20 years ago when Aaron Pryor defended his WBA junior welterweight title against Alexis Arguello on Nov. 12, 1982, at the Orange Bowl.

Trinidad, 28, last appeared in Florida on Oct. 23, 1993, when he made the second defense of his IBF welterweight title by stopping Anthony Stephens in the 10th round in Fort Lauderdale. He has not fought in Miami since 1991 when he won twice in only his second year as a pro.

The Trinidad-Thiam matchup is just one of several fights put together by DKP matchmaker John Beninati. Boxers from nine countries, including Cuba, are on the card. Miami’s undefeated Randall Bailey (21-0, 21 KOs), trained by veteran Al Bonnani of Davie, will defend his WBA super welterweight crown against Colombia’s Ener Julio (20-3, 16 KOs).

Cuban defector Joel Casamayor of the Fort Lauderdale-based Team Freedom will defend his WBA super featherweight title against Detroit’s Bernard Harris. Davie’s Irish Tommy Martin, an up-and-coming heavyweight trying to break through, is one of the top fighters on the undercard.

The biggest challenge will be for arena officials to make the transformation from basketball arena to fight setting, as it is the first time the arena has hosted boxing. The quick turnaround begins after Friday night’s WNBA Sol-Utah Starzz game. Crews are expected to work around the clock.

The co-main events have been set for the Friday Night Fights Solidarity Night card at Jim Davidson Theater in Pembroke Pines. Middleweight Terry Moore of Davie PAL will meet Johnny Gerbasi of Royal Palm Beach PAL, and lightweight Terry Mossberger of Royal Palm Beach PAL will face Raymond Betancourt of Broward Sheriff’s PAL. Royal Palm Beach PAL is one of the Florida Gold Coast’s largest amateur clubs. The Gerrits Leprechaun Boxing/AFL-CIO amateur card will feature several other undercard bouts, including the amateur debut of Rocky Pinckney of Hollywood, son of former boxer Roger Pinckney. An Aug. 12 pro card featuring junior middleweights Santiago Samaniego (31-5-1, 25 KOs) of Panama and former world champion Santos “Chino” Cardona (38-9, 26 KOs) of Puerto Rico are scheduled to fight a 12-round IBA 154-pound world title fight on the Team Freedom card to be televised on tape-delay by Sunshine Network Aug. 15, 18, 19 and 26. Legendary trainer Angelo Dundee of Weston and former ABC Wide World of Sports boxing analyst Don Chevriar will work the broadcast. Also scheduled is Laura Serrana (19-0-1) of Mexico vs. Miami’s Melissa Salamone (19-0) for the IBA 130-pound world title. … Miami’s former WBA cruiserweight champion, Robert “Preacher Man” Daniels (39-4-1, 32 KOs), fights David Tua (36-1, 31 KOs) Friday in Las Vegas for the 12-round IBF Intercontinental/USBA heavyweight title.
