Unseeded Whitney Kraft, of Boca Raton, upset the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds to place second in the USPTA National Tennis Championships on Sept. 18 at Palm Springs, Calif.

Kraft upset top seed Juan Ayala of Houston and No. 3 seed Nigel O’Rourke of San Francisco, but was defeated in the finals by John Austin, brother of Tracy Austin.

In another major tournament last month, Kraft defeated Pete Minarich of Naples for the championship of the State 35s Singles Tennis Tournament at Boca West Country Club.

Kraft is the director of racquet sports at Boca Pointe Country Club.

Courtney Bergman, of Boca Raton, and Travis Rettenmaier, of Saddlebrook, won the 14-and-under title in the Florida State Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships last weekend at Seasons Racquet Club in Boca Raton.

In the finals Bergman and Rettenmaier defeated Alyssa Cohen of Parkland and Hamid Mirzadeh of Palm Beach 6-1, 6-3.

Bergman is an eighth-grader at St. Andrew’s School. She trains at the Evert-Seguso-Bassett Tennis Training Center.

Golf

Jim Weeden, of Boca Del Mar Country Club, took second place in the 32nd annual Club Car/Southeast Chapter Championships Sept. 21 at Breakers West Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Weeden shot 71-68-139 to trail tournament champion Frank Dobbs, of Port St. Lucie, by six strokes.

Tom Cleaver of Addison Reserve, Delray Beach, and Bobby Pollitt of Hunters Run Golf Club, Boynton Beach, both shot 142 to tie for fifth place.

Registration is open for a junior golf program at Okeeheelee Public Golf Course at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach.

The program includes training in rules and etiquette, with teams formed for match play. It will be held Saturdays from 3:30 p.m.-6 p.m., Oct. 12-Nov. 2.

Baseball

The Boca Lightning won its fourth straight game in the Khoury Fall Travel League, defeating Pompano Beach 8-4.

Kevin Keene, Mike Cipolla and Derrick Mollica had two hits apiece for the Lightning.
