Just past the front door of Kelly’s Landing, past the lobster tank on your right and under the miniature version of Fenway Park’s Green Monster, a group of horse racing photographs adorn the wall between a few tables and chairs.

Jack Lally calls it the “wall of fame,” and it could grow significantly in stature this weekend.

Kelly’s Landing is a popular South Florida restaurant, especially for New Englanders searching for whole belly fried clams, steamers and chowder served at the original Kelly’s Landing in Weymouth, Mass. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s namesake, a 5-year-old horse owned and christened by Lally and his wife, Louise, is becoming well known in thoroughbred racing for his class and speed.

Owned and bred by Lally, Kelly’s Landing has earned close to $300,000 while winning six races and setting a track record last year at Churchill Downs. The gelding now returns to South Florida, after spending the spring in Kentucky, for a rematch with champion sprinter Lost in the Fog in Saturday’s $500,000 Smile Handicap at Calder Race Course. And the Lallys will return to see old friends at their favorite restaurant.

“That’s the best part of this … all the friends we’ve made and the wonderful people we’ve met at Kelly’s,” Lally said.

Lally, who races under the name of his Kentucky farm, Summerplace, has been involved in thoroughbred racing more than 25 years. Some six years ago, Lally and his wife began spending three or four months every winter at Lago Mar Place in Fort Lauderdale, and three times a week they would eat at Kelly’s.

“We’ve had people who work there stop at our farm when they’re vacationing and they’ve come to the track to watch our horse when he’s raced [at Gulfstream],” Lally said.

Debbie Skinner, a partner in Kelly’s Landing restaurant, said: “We try to follow [the horse]. … I know I plan on seeing him run Saturday.”

It was during lunch one afternoon at Kelly’s that Lally christened Kelly’s Landing, a son of the speedy sire Patton out of Lally’s stakes-winning mare Best Game.

“I was telling Louise that I had to name the Best Game foal,” Lally said. “We were going over names and nothing was coming and all of sudden Louise said, ‘Let’s just name him Kelly’s Landing.'” The name stuck and it’s worked out well.”

Unraced as a 2-year-old, Kelly’s Landing blossomed last year as a top sprinter after setting the six-furlong track record when winning the Aristides Handicap at Churchill Downs in 1:07.59. The colt returned to Churchill and finished second June 3 to Lost in the Fog while attempting to defend his title in the Aristides.

Despite the loss, Lally and trainer Eddie Kenneally are optimistic about the six-furlong Smile.

“The horse is doing really well,” Kenneally said. “He ran a very good race last time at Churchill Downs. He won the same race last year and with the Breeders’ Cup being [at Churchill] later this year, hopefully, we’ll have a fresh horse for that race.”

Added Lally, “We’d like to try [Lost in the Fog] again. I have a great deal of respect for Lost in the Fog, but I also respect and think a great deal of Kelly’s Landing, too.”
